How long does Mehndi last ?

Mehndi could last on the human canvas (wearer) anywhere from one to six weeks. The length of time mehndi stays depends on a number of contributing factors:

    • The quality of Mehndi applied.
    • The thickness of Mehndi design.
    • How long you let the Mehndi on your skin?
    • How often your Mehndi design gets washed?
    • What type of soap you use?
    • Your skin type and body heat.
    • Where you have the Mehndi on your body?

Use the best quality mehndi possible. However, thickness of the design is a matter of personal choice and design limitations. Try to keep the mehndi herbal paste on your skin as long as possible since it leaves colour for as long as 24 hours.

Try to use milder soaps and wash the mehndi design as less frequent as possible, if you want the designs to last longer. After applying mehndi applied, do not wash your hands for at least 24 hours, and do not use any harsh antibacterial soaps as long as the Mehndi remains upon your skin.

So, if you’re not really excited about the mehndi design, washing your hands more often and using stronger soaps will help you remove the design sooner than later, but there is no quick formula of getting the mehndi  immediately off your skin.  I bet, chances are, however, that you will love your mehndi.

Just like the fact that a painting’s quality is also dependent upon the type of canvas, skin type and body heat have a lot to do with the quality of the mehndi design on a particular person.  Generally, people who  have a lot of body heat and less oily, less smooth skin tend to have darker  mehndi.  And some people are just lucky!!!  It is a common misconception that being darker skinned hampers the chances of having a nice mehndi design.  I can tell you from my first-hand experience, being a dark-skinned East Indian, skin color has hardly anything to do with the final hue of the dye.  My mehndi always comes out as dark brown on both sides of my hands, and I can get a nice, dark sienna on my legs.

In order to enhance the quality of your mehndi design, choose a place on your skin that is clean, dry and free from oils.  Certain parts of the body work better than others due to variations in body temperature and oiliness of skin.  Usually the palms of the hand and soles of the feet work optimally for mehndi design.
